Walt Disney came to Hollywood in 1923 with a short film about Alice in Wonderland, which he planned to turn into a cartoon series. October 16, a distributor agreed to release these shorts and thus, history was made. The Walt Disney company was formed, creating the most successful film company in history. Shortly after this date, they released many of the familiar and much loved classics that many of us grew up with, including Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto and many others. In 1937, they released their first full length feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. From humble beginnings in the early days came the many characters found in so many fancy dress outfits today. But are they just for kids?
Not Just for Kids
Disney fancy dress came about because kids enjoy playing dress up, especially if they can dress up like their favorite cartoon characters. However, it’s not just the kids who can have fun with these costumes. Ask almost any adult today what their favorite Disney character was while growing up, and they may tell you anything from Mickey Mouse to Ariel from the Little Mermaid. Adults and kids alike love these characters, so when it comes time to dress up for a fancy dress event, you can bet that there will be at least one adult dressing up as their favorite Disney character.
Types of Fancy Dress
Today’s popular Disney costumes come in a variety of characters, sizes and colors. The most popular of all these match the popular Disney movies, such as Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3.
Often, parents like to dress up their infants and toddlers in costumes from Finding Nemo, while others like the classics such as Mickey and Minnie. Older children like to dress up as Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, or even as princesses from the many Disney princess movies. Adults have a wide range of fancy dress outfits to choose from, including the many heroes and heroines of the Disney movies—not to mention all the villains to choose from.
Where to Wear
Now that you have your fancy dress outfit, where are you going to wear it? Normally, most people wear their costumes to a party or even while taking their children out Trick-or-Treating on Halloween. But…what about wearing it to work? Of course, you wouldn’t want to do this if your job is one where going against the dress code will get you fired, or if the work environment is very strict. However, in informal environments, once in a while may be the thing to break up the monotony.
Wear your fancy dress while out on a walk. This is sure to turn more than a few heads, and you may find some interesting conversations from doing this. Please don’t do this if your costume is adult oriented…may get you arrested. No matter where you wear it, getting dressed up as your favorite Disney character can make you feel like a kid again!
